Even the angels have real style in Santa Fe

July 22nd, 2011

Every morning I get up and go on a long walk up Alameda. I pass by seven beautiful angels carved out of wood standing on the grass by the river in a row. They look like a cross between a Picasso painting and folk art. I happened to notice the other day that one of the angels had the cutest little handbag with daisies on it. Yes, even the angels have Real Style in Santa Fe.

Real Style at the International Folk Market

July 11th, 2011

Real “Ethnic” style in Santa Fe. Like a kid in a candy store, I walked through the International Folk Art Market in a complete daze, soaking up the colors, textures, sights and sounds—it was almost overwhelming. People were buying, buying, buying, and everyone looked so happy that it made me happy too. And then I heard it, off in the distance, the sound of West African reggae music playing on the stage. Besides loving the music, I was taken by the truly authentic ethnic clothing the musicians were wearing. I just loved it. Mixtures of patterns and colors, so hip, so fun, so stylish. And then it happened, the beat took over and I started dancing by myself with total strangers. As much as I love to dance, I’ve never done that before. Music, dancing, and shopping—oh so Santa Fe style. Check out my photos of the Art Market here.

Our tomorrows are made up of what we are thinking today

July 11th, 2011

I highly recommend the documentary film I Am, directed by Tom Shadyac, the celebrity director of Ace Ventura and Bruce Almighty. I recently saw the movie in Santa Fe, and a Q&A with Tom after the showing. The movie is all about the personal transformation and discovery Tom underwent after a serious biking accident. The film demonstrates the powerful effect of positive emotions on people and on things as lowly as a container of yogurt. He also talks about a thing called “Heart Math”, which is a science that tells us that the heart is more powerful than the mind. At the Q&A, the most amazing thing happened: An 8-year-old girl raised her hand and asked: “What is the world going to be like when I am bigger?” Deep gasp from the audience. The answer is what we all realized the second she asked it—that our tomorrows are made up of what we are thinking today. I wanted to give her one of my children’s books, which is all about how to channel positive thinking. I’m sending them to the printer next week! And don’t worry, I’ll let you know. Spiritually Savvy Kids will launch soon in a big way. It’s all connected: my client, Santa Fe Soul, is bringing Heart Math to Santa Fe this month. Check it out here.

Just another stylin’ Saturday in oh so Santa Fe

July 6th, 2011

Real style is self-expression and it was everywhere last Saturday in Santa Fe from the Gay Pride Parade to the Rodeo. I was basking in it. There was Diana Ross, gay cowboys, flamboyant Egyptians, lots of fun-colored hair, rainbow striped socks—even the dogs were dressed up. I do have to say that I’m really jealous. I have to admit it. Not only would I like to be the Rodeo Queen, I’d like to have the red bejeweled shirt she had on. Just another stylin’ Saturday in oh so Santa Fe.

Real Style Turns Me On

June 23rd, 2011

I can’t help myself whether I’m in the East Village in NYC, seeing an explosion of individual style, or in Santa Fe, where everyone is tattooed, or in magical Sundance, Utah, nestled in the mountains, where I sit now. My years of buying for some of the hottest stores in NYC, traveling the world spotting trends, has never left me. It is part of who I am and what I do and I love it.

As I sit on a rock next to a raging river I am struck by how authentic the Sundance style is. It could have easily become Disneyland gone Western. Sundance resort grabs you and pulls you in with its magnetic energy that says feel my spirit and become part of the beauty. Waterfalls, wooden bridges, art, yoga class, and of course the hot tub and spa are all part of what makes Sundance so special. On the inside, a lovely stage, organic restaurant and the Sundance store. Luckily for me and my pocketbook I recognized that most of the items in the store were the same items I once carried in my chain of boutiques. But there was one thing that I just had to have: a handmade whip-stitched leather notebook with the name Sundance stamped on the cover. For me, real style begins with handwriting my blog posts in an authentic leather-bound notebook.

How Do You Recreate & Reinvent Your Life?

June 20th, 2011

Here in Santa Fe people transform every day. It starts with just a feeling. There is an energy, something in the air that says ‘go for it, be who you are.’ Then there is the mountains everywhere you look, ten minutes away and you are climbing up them, standing on land that speaks to you. And right away you feel a calmness. Of course the sun is always shining with an energy that feeds your emotional soul. The people in Santa Fe accept you and like you just the way you are. Ask someone, anyone in Santa Fe, “what do you do?” and they will tell you three things. Case in point, I met a guy at a dinner party he is…

…a divorce lawyer, president of a horse rescue organization and a spin teacher at the gym three days a week.

I kid you not, everyone here does three things and one of them is always a life passion. So here I am in Santa Fe doing what they do. Ask me! Go ahead, ask me ‘what do I do?’ I thought you’d never ask! Ok I am…

privileged to be a Social Media Consultant for Santa Fe Soul, a health and healing center…
grateful to have worked with The National Dance Institute of New Mexico on their stunning gala…
excited to be publishing my Spiritually Savvy Kids series for print and mobile media.

And of course my inner fashionista is always at work finding the latest trends and blogging about people that have ‘real style’. On the side I’m religious about my boot camp and ballet classes. And it takes some getting used to as I am a Type A New York personality who believes that you work 60 hours a week at one thing to prove that you are a Type A personality, and can make it in New York.

So I believe transformation is about finding your passion, doing what you’re good at and healing your
inner child. With no master plan except to vibrate love, enjoy everyday and never worry what tomorrow might bring.

That’s my new Santa Fe recipe for success…

My Inner Fashionista

June 13th, 2011

You can take the girl out of Bloomingdale’s, but you can’t take the Bloomingdale’s out of the girl. I just can’t help myself—no matter where I go, or what I do, I can always find something super hip to buy that I definitely don’t need. Take for instance my recent trip to Aspen. Walking down the street I bee-lined into a vintage store where I found 30-year-old cowboy boots in a funky green color. Next, a fun road trip with my husband to Madrid, NM, an eclectic ghost town with the funkiest shops ever. Inside of a vintage-inspired shop, tucked away underneath a shelf, was a vintage leather belt studded with silver crosses with a buckle decked out with turquoise stones and skulls framing who else but the Virgin of Guadalupe. For $70 I scooped it up with no regrets—everywhere I go, people comment on this belt. I love that I still got the fashionista in me.

Just another Spring evening in oh so Santa Fe

April 30th, 2011

Springtime in Santa Fe and there’s so much to do. Three events in one night is typical Santa Fe. Last night I went to see the movie I AM, then to a Moving People dance performance, and then to an art installation at the Santa Fe University of Art & Design. Each of these events touched my heart in different ways: I was uplifted by I AM’s positive message, moved by the student dance performances, choreography and music, and inspired by the art exhibit, which was projected outside on the walls of the university. Three events, three wonderful feelings and three memorable experiences and it’s just another night in oh so Santa Fe.

It’s all in the Journey

September 23rd, 2010

Homeward bound has been a transformational journey and an incredible roller coaster ride.

the highs…
~ having a store in my hometown…
~ traveling to india with my husband to find beautiful things
~ supporting children and the arts
~ creating magical events
~ bringing beauty to people’s homes
~ the amazing customers who made every day in the store a joy

and the lows…
~ the economy crashing down just as we expanded
~ the physical demands of running four furniture stores

More than anything I want to tell you how thankful I am for all of you – our customers and supporters who have stuck by us through it all. I will be eternally grateful to you.

One journey has come to an end, but I have already started down a new path.
I will be working on my books, with kids, creating events, consulting and pursuing my dreams and passions.

Remember ~

it’s all about love.

I will keep in touch with you and please keep in touch with me.

I climbed 3 miles up to the highest peak in Taos, New Mexico. The gift at the top of the mountain is the most beautiful pristine lake ever…Its what I imagine heaven to be!
